7 Tips for Saving Money on Energy Costs

Here at Muirfield Mechanical, we want your home warm and cozy during the winter. We also want to help lower your heating bills.

Tips Save Money on Home Heating Systems in Acton

Improper insulation, leaky doors, and drafty windows cause heat loss and high winter energy bills. Leaky roofs, power outlets, and fireplaces are also common areas that allow heat to escape. An old heating system can contribute to a high winter energy bill, as well. An old system uses more energy than a recent energy-efficient model.

Seven Ways to Spend Less on Winter Heating

1. Dress Warm Inside

For example, switch out a t-shirt for a cozy sweater. Or wear a pair of wool pants instead of cotton. And an extra blanket on your bed means you can lower the thermostat before bed.

2. Rely on the Sun

Sunlight can help warm your home during the day. Open curtains, shades, or blinds on sunny days to get some sunlight.

3.Use a Programmable Thermostat

A programmable thermostat saves money by giving you more control over the temperature.

For example, program the thermostat to remain at a specific temperature when you’re at work. But set it to raise the temperature before you arrive home from work.

4. Check Insulation the Attic

Is the insulation compressed or otherwise out of place? If so, heat is escaping your home much faster than it should. It also means your HVAC system is working overtime.

5. Clean the Air Ducts and Replace Dirty Filters

Air ducts with leaks, holes, or poor connections will cause your winter heating bills to skyrocket. And dirty filters reduce airflow, which also raises the bill.

Having your air ducts inspected, cleaned, and repaired saves money on your heating and cooling bills. The same is true for keeping clean air filters.

6. Use Your Kitchen

Cook at home during the winter. The heat from the oven or stove keeps the kitchen warm. Leave the door slightly ajar when done, so the remaining heat warms the room.

7. Reverse Your Ceiling Fan

During the winter, reverse your ceiling fan to spin in a clockwise direction. This pulls warm air from the ceiling down into the room.
